Scotties had their first dog show in 1860 in Birmingham, England. After that, there were numerous shows of similar breeds including Skye terriers, Yorkies, and Dandie Dinmonts all claiming to be the real deal. Angry at the mockery of their precious breed, Scottish breeders took pressure to air their grievances. They wrote to Live Stock Journal with their arguments about what the standard should be. The arguments continued at such a violent pace that the publication finally put an end to it, issuing a statement: “We see no point in prolonging this discussion unless each correspondent described the dog he believed to be the true type.” holds.”
Captain Gordon Murray accepted the challenge and wrote the correct description of the perfect Scottie. It lasted until breeder J.B. Morrison finally established an official standard in 1880. In 1882 the Scottish Terrier Club was formed for both England and Scotland. As the breed’s popularity increased, separate clubs were formed for each, but the two regions have since developed a friendly relationship.
