The breed went through another difficult phase during World War II when all dogs were either drafted into the military or served as suppliers of meat and fur. Before the Akitas died out completely, however, breeding could be started again with the remaining specimens. However, at that time there were two different variants. German shepherd dogs were probably crossed into the slimmer one during the war. This line was brought to the US by the military, where it evolved into the American Akita.
