Akitas have a firm place in Japanese history. These dogs are said to have been mentioned for the first time 5000 years ago and have already accompanied the samurais. Originally, the Akita served both as a helper in hunting bears and wild boar and as a guard dog for the house and yard. By the turn of the century, the Akita was also popular as a competitor in dog fights, which of course was terrible for the breed itself. During this time, large, powerful dogs such as the Tosa Inu or other mastiff breeds were crossed. Fortunately, dog fighting was banned in Japan in 1908.
