When is a Chihuahua a Mini?

Those breed representatives that weigh less than 1 kg and do not grow taller than approx. 15 cm are called Mini or Teacup Chihuahuas. These animals are often sold at unbelievably high prices and are considered a rarity and something special. Words like “mini” are intended to promote sales and praise cuteness.

Unfortunately, many follow this dubious trend.

The Chihuahua is already the smallest dog breed in the world. Why this has to be bred to the extreme, often with fatal health consequences for the animals, remains questionable.

By the way, there are no official Mini Chihuahuas and according to the breed standard, dogs that are smaller than 1 kg are not allowed to be bred from. However, to obtain Teacup Chihuahuas, this is exactly what is done.

Sometimes, however, Chihuahuas weighing well under 2 kg are simply referred to as minis. These dogs are still within the standard and are actually quite normal Chis.
