The first mention of the beagle, whose exact origin of the name is unclear, appears in 1515 in the household books of Henry VIII. There a so-called “Keeper of the Beagles” is rewarded. In 1615 the “Little Beagle” found its way into Gervase Markham’s general description of the major breeds of hunting dogs. However, it was not until 1890 that the Beagle was recognized as a separate dog breed by the English Kennel Club.
