Why is My Chihuahua Losing Its Fur?

Puppy

At around 4 to 5 months, the Chihuahua puppy loses its baby fur. Now his adult fur is growing, which will be very dense and silky, especially on long-haired Chihuahuas.

Adult Chihuahua

As a full-grown four-legged friend, the Chihuahua then has a seasonal coat change twice a year. During this time he gets either his winter or summer coat and sheds plenty of old hair. Otherwise, the Chi sheds easily all year round. However, frequent brushing and combing will help keep the amount of hair shedding down in the home.

When is it a concern?

However, if the Chihuahua loses so much fur that bald spots appear, this is no longer normal. You should also be alert if your Chi sheds an excessive amount of fur outside of the molting season.

Hair loss (alopecia) can be caused by:

  • Cushing’s syndrome (often accompanied by dandruff, a dull coat, and eventual hair loss)
  • thyroid disorders
  • hormonal imbalances
  • Alopecia X (Follicle disorder with no apparent cause; the Chihuahua is otherwise healthy)
  • infection with mites
  • metabolic disorders
  • fungal infections
  • inferior feed
  • bacterial skin inflammation
