Why Cats Pout

Even cats can sulk and be offended if something doesn’t suit them and they feel uncomfortable. The reasons and the way in which the sulk is expressed are very different. Find out why cats sulk, how they react when they do, and what you can do as a cat owner.

Even cats can be offended and offended. Not all cats show this, some cats show it in their owners through their behavior.

Reasons For Sulking In Cats

There are many reasons why cats sometimes give their owners the cold shoulder. One of the most common triggers is being alone for a long time: Many cat owners report that their cats sulk when they are away longer than usual or when they are not at home for several weeks, for example, because of vacation or hospital stays. Because not only dogs but also cats miss their people when they are not there for a long time.

Other reasons cats may be offended include changing vets, moving in with a second cat, or moving house. There are also cats who remember specific people who often annoy or frighten them. Some cats then behave in a deliberately dismissive manner towards these people. Many cats are also offended when they are “chased” from their favorite place, for example when cleaning or rearranging the furniture.

Cats also have different timings when they sulk. Not all offended cats show their upset immediately. For some, the behavior only occurs the next day or when the person next leaves the home.

The Behavior Of Pouting Cats

The way cats sulk can vary greatly. Cats often exhibit the following behaviors:

  • They refuse to be touched or stroked.
  • They meow long and loud.
  • They refuse the food.
  • They avoid people.

You don’t show up for several hours or days (especially those who are outdoors)
Some cats also bite and scratch.
Cats pee demonstratively (often only once) in the apartment, on clothing, or on the bed.

What To Do If The Cat Pouts

Every cat is different. Some cats react relatively quickly, while others are very unforgiving and take longer to get back to “normal”. When your cat is offended, you have no choice but to give her the time she needs. Don’t try to force the cat to do anything if it wants to be left alone. Nevertheless, you should of course pay attention to her.

If you know what triggers sulking, you can try to avoid that trigger in the future. For example, consciously involve your cat more in your everyday life. For cats that sulk, especially after their owner’s absence, it can help to consciously say goodbye to the cat before you leave the house.

If someone you know scares your cat for “fun” when they visit, advise them not to do so in the future. It doesn’t matter whether the cat shows offended behavior afterward or not: This stresses the cat unnecessarily.
