The breed was officially recognized by the Soviet government in 1958 and was later introduced to other countries.
The German Shepherd, on the other hand, has a longer history and can be traced back to the late 19th century in Germany. The breed was originally developed as a herding dog, but its intelligence and trainability led to its use as a police and military dog as well. German Shepherds became popular in the United States in the early 1900s and have remained a popular breed ever since.
