Watery Eyes / Increased Eye Discharge

Tear fluid is produced by two tear glands in the eye. One is located on the inside of the third eyelid (nictitating skin) and another under the upper eyelid in the area of the eye socket. By blinking, the tear fluid is distributed and the cornea is kept moist. A good “fit” of the lids is a prerequisite for normal tear flow. The tear fluid is drained via a canal system. Two openings – one on the upper eyelid, one on the lower eyelid, each located towards the inner corner of the eye – merge into small tear canals. These unite to form a common canal that runs through the nasal bone and ends in the nose. From there, the drained tear fluid can either be directed to the nasal opening. It usually drains through the nasopharynx and is then swallowed.

Why are my pet’s eyes watering?

Tear drainage problems can have a variety of causes. Some can be treated well, others not. First of all, it must be determined whether there is a drainage problem or whether too much tear fluid is being produced, for example in the case of inflammation or painful processes in and on the eye.

However, the most common reasons for permanently watery eyes are in the area of tear drainage. Blockages caused by inflammatory cells or foreign bodies, adhesions, or scarring are common reasons for insufficient tear drainage. There may also be malformations in the tear duct openings or in the area of the tubules themselves. In order to be able to narrow down the problem of the obstruction, an eye examination by the veterinarian, if necessary with a thorough examination and rinsing with the help of a probe, is required. The animal must be sedated, i.e. lightly anesthetized so that it can work calmly and safely.
