Taxonomy and Physical Characteristics of the Minke Whale
The minke whale belongs to the Balaenopteridae family, which includes other large whales such as the humpback whale and blue whale. It is divided into two subspecies: the common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and the Antarctic minke whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis).
Minke whales have a streamlined body, with a dark grey or blackish back and a white belly. They have a pointed snout, which is characteristic of all baleen whales. They have two blowholes on top of their head, and their dorsal fin is located towards the posterior end of their body.
The common minke whale is typically smaller than the Antarctic minke whale, with a maximum length of 10 meters and weight of 10 tons. In contrast, the Antarctic minke whale can grow up to 11 meters in length and weigh up to 13 tons. Both subspecies have a lifespan of approximately 50 years.
