Introduction to Horned Lizards

Horned lizards, also known as horned toads, are a group of reptiles belonging to the family Phrynosomatidae. There are 16 species of horned lizards found in North and Central America, each with unique physical and behavioral adaptations to their environment.

Taxonomy and Classification

The most well-known genus of horned lizards is Phrynosoma, which includes 12 of the 16 species.

The taxonomy of horned lizards has been a subject of debate among scientists, with some proposing that some species should be reclassified due to genetic and morphological differences. Despite this, the current classification system remains the most widely accepted, with the 16 species of horned lizards divided into three groups: the flat-tailed horned lizards, the round-tailed horned lizards, and the mountain horned lizards.
