History and Origin of Chinchillas
Chinchillas were originally found in the Andes Mountains of South America, where they were hunted for their soft fur by the native people. In the early 20th century, chinchillas were brought to the United States and Europe for their fur trade. Due to overhunting, chinchillas became an endangered species in the wild, and efforts were made to breed them in captivity. Today, chinchillas are still bred for their fur, but they are also kept as pets in many households around the world. There are two species of chinchillas: the short-tailed chinchilla (Chinchilla chinchilla) and the long-tailed chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera). The latter is the more common species kept as pets. Chinchillas have a lifespan of around 10-15 years and can weigh anywhere from 400 to 800 grams. They are nocturnal animals and are most active during the night.
