The Fascinating Lifecycle of Luna Moth Caterpillars

Introduction: What are Luna Moth Caterpillars?

Luna moths are a species of large, green moths that are native to North America. Their caterpillars are just as fascinating as the moths themselves. Luna moth caterpillars have a unique life cycle, which involves several stages of development before they turn into adult moths. The caterpillars are known for their bright green color and distinct markings, which help them blend in with their surroundings.

Hatching: From Egg to Caterpillar

The life cycle of Luna moths begins when female moths lay eggs on the leaves of trees such as hickory, walnut, and birch. After a week or so, the eggs hatch into tiny caterpillars that are less than 1cm long. The caterpillars start feeding on the leaves of the tree they were born on and grow rapidly over the next few weeks. Luna moth caterpillars can grow up to 3 inches long, and their bodies are covered in tiny spines. As they grow, they shed their skin several times in a process called molting.
