Felis silvestris lybica: The Wild Ancestor of Domestic Cats
The domestic cat, or Felis catus, is descended from the wildcat, Felis silvestris. Specifically, domestic cats are believed to have originated from the subspecies known as Felis silvestris lybica, which is found in North Africa and the Middle East. This species of wildcat is still found in these regions today, and is often referred to as the African wildcat. DNA analysis has confirmed that domestic cats are closely related to this subspecies, and that they likely diverged from it around 10,000 years ago.
The African wildcat is a small, slender, and agile predator that is well-suited for life in arid and semi-arid environments.
