Modena is More Than Maserati

The northern Italian city of Modena is home to three pigeon breeds. This is unique. From there, the animals developed differently in different countries and started their triumphal procession in the pigeon world.

Car fans associate Modena with the Maserati. For lovers of culinary delights, Aceto Balsamico, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Grana Padano are at the top of the list and for opera lovers, Modena is the hometown of the tenor of the century, Luciano Pavarotti. For pigeon breeders, on the other hand, it is the origin of what is probably the most popular show pigeon in the world today, the Modenese. Over the centuries, three pigeon breeds have developed from one breed in different countries. They all represent the desire or the interpretation of the breeder’s taste. No other pigeon breed comes in so many colors. Here everyone will find the right one for themselves.

Even if the Modenese have developed in completely different directions in terms of their appearance over time, they have common elements: they all descend from the original Modenese from Modena and all three breeds are identified in the basic marking variants Schietti (single color), Gazzi ( drawn) and Magnani (multicolored) bred.

Modena

Fat is chic, chubby is funny – the English have bred their Modena according to this motto. For a long time, it was known under the name “English Modena”, before it is now only referred to after its hometown. He has the smallest distribution of all Modenese breeds. The Modena has probably strayed too far from the archetype. Apart from the richness of color, they have practically nothing left of the Modenese.

German Modenese

The undisputed number one among pigeon breeds is the German Modenese. This also has to do with the fact that Germany has the world’s largest number of pigeon fanciers. In the meantime, however, the German Modenese has become a citizen of the world. His character was bred to be divided into thirds. This creates a tremendous harmony in appearance. Although he belongs to the chicken pigeons, very high demands are also made on color and markings.

Triganino Modenese

Northern Italy is still the home of the Triganino Modenese today. From there they are currently in the process of conquering the world of pigeon fanciers outside of Italy. They are characterized by an enormous richness of color. There are colors in which it has not yet been clarified how something like this is genetically possible. In addition, there are an unusually large number of pigeons with mosaic markings. This means that two colors can be seen on one pigeon. In Italy, a lot of attention is paid to color and drawing. They are there the most important breed characteristics.
