Understanding Zoonotic Diseases

Dog Saliva
Dog saliva contains a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Although most of these microorganisms are harmless, some can cause infections in humans. For example, the bacterium Pasteurella multocida is commonly found in the mouths of dogs and can cause skin infections, respiratory infections, and even sepsis in humans. Another bacterium, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, is found in the saliva of dogs and cats and can cause severe infections in immunocompromised individuals, including septicemia and meningitis. In addition to bacteria, dog saliva can also contain viruses such as rabies, although this is a rare occurrence in domesticated pets.
