The Chihuahua’s ears are usually self-cleaning. The earwax protects the sensitive dog ears and transports dirt, dust, and other things outside.
Nevertheless, you should inspect the dog’s ears once a week, look for abnormalities and clean them if necessary. Simple dirt that sticks to the inside of the ear leather can usually be easily removed with a damp cloth or washcloth. There are also special cleansing pads and lotions.
The latter is particularly useful when there is a lot of earwax or dirt in the inner ear. The cleaning lotion is dripped into the Chihuahua’s ear and gently massaged in from the outside. The dog will then shake and throw the dirt out. The Chihuahua’s ear should be wiped afterward. Finished.
Healthy dog ears are pink and don’t have a distinct odor of their own. On the other hand, scratches, itching, a tilted head, crumbly and/or a lot of brown secretion, injuries, or a musty smell indicate ear problems that should be checked by a veterinarian.
Important:
Do not use ear swabs when cleaning. These can injure your Chihuahua’s ear.
