Guppies – the Number One in the Aquarium

Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are the undisputed number one among fish lovers. No wonder, because the fish add color to the tank, are extremely keen to reproduce, and even forgive small maintenance mistakes.

Hot Springs are a Delight

The country of origin of the guppies is in the northeastern region of South America such as northern Brazil or Venezuela and the offshore islands. However, humans have now settled the small fish in numerous places around the world. Swarms of wild guppy can even be found in Germany today. The tropical fish find optimal conditions in thermal springs or the outlets of cooling or sewage water.

Countless Offspring of the Million Fish

Guppies belong to the tooth carp family. Since they are extremely prolific, they are nicknamed “million fish”. A female can have between 20 and 100 young in a month. The males are visibly smaller than the females with a maximum length of 3 cm and much more colorfully colored. The Endler Guppy is a little smaller, but at least as colorful as the classic breeding Guppy. This breeding form comes closest to the wild guppy.

Vitamins Make the Guppy Shine

You should feed your guppies dry and live food. Not only the fish but also the observer can look forward to particularly high-quality and vitamin-rich food: the better the colorful aquarium inhabitants are fed, the more brilliantly their colors shine. A special treat for guppies is mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. As a surface fish, it prefers to take its food from the water surface.

This Will Make Your Guppy Feel Good

The ideal temperatures for guppies are between 22 and 24 °C. However, regular water changes are mandatory. When putting together the group, you calculate about three females for every male. The accessories for the guppy tank are no different from those of other aquariums. They particularly like lush vegetation in their area. However, they also like to pluck off plants that are too fine. With good care, the popular aquarium inhabitants can live up to four years. Floating plants are also very suitable. They offer young fish in particular numerous hiding places.
