Can the Chihuahua Tolerate Heat?

The Chihuahua tolerates heat quite well. After all, the breed comes from Mexico and the dogs only have a little warming undercoat.

Nevertheless, even the little Chihuahua can have problems with hot temperatures. Many four-legged friends show this very clearly. They pant more and consciously look for cool and shady places. If you have tiles in the apartment, the Chihuahua will most likely settle there.

Tips for hot days:

  • Make sure you have enough fresh (possibly slightly chilled) drinking water in summer.
  • Find a cool spot in the house or garden (umbrella).
  • Go for a walk early morning or late evening. Gladly also at night.
  • A forest nearby? It’s more comfortable for you there too.
  • Running on meadows or forest floors is better for paws than hot asphalt and sidewalks.
  • Take water with you on walks.
  • Cool down on the balcony or in the garden in the form of a dog pool or a large water bowl.
  • Your Chihuahua doesn’t tolerate the heat so well? Put a damp towel over him.
  • If your dog accelerates even in summer temperatures, slow it down and move activities to cooler mornings or evenings.
