Are Chihuahuas Prone to Disease?

No. The breed is very durable and hardy. Chihuahuas would hardly live up to 20 years if they were susceptible to diseases.

As with every breed, however, there are also some diseases among Chihuahuas that are considered typical of these breed representatives. Of course, not every Chihuahua will be affected by these in the course of their lives, but unfortunately, they are more common within the breeding line.

Among them are:

  • Mitral regurgitation
  • Patella Luxation (PL)
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Problems during the change of teeth
  • Premature tooth loss
  • Tartar
  • Open fontanel
  • Brachycephaly
  • Diabetes mellitus / hypoglycemia
  • Urinary stones (urate stones)
  • Eye problems (e.g. watery eyes, PRA)
  • Breathing problems

There are also other diseases that can occur in all dog breeds. For example, infections with parvovirus or distemper. However, many dangerous diseases can be successfully prevented with vaccination.

Parasites also occur in Chihuahuas, such as diarrhea, vomiting, inflammation, or fever. As an owner, you should never wait too long in the event of any abnormalities but instead, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

If you buy your puppy from a reputable breeder, you have the best chance of a healthy dog, because the breeder will make sure that hereditary diseases and typical problems do not occur in his breeding.

Teacup Chihuahuas and Mini Chihuahuas, on the other hand, have a very short life expectancy. They are also very susceptible to disease.
