What is IVDD and how does it affect Dachshunds?

Introduction: What is IVDD?

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a common spinal condition in dogs, especially in Dachshunds. It occurs when the cushiony discs between the vertebrae in the spine degenerate or herniate, causing pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This can result in pain, weakness, and even paralysis in affected dogs. While IVDD can occur in any breed, Dachshunds are particularly susceptible due to their unique body shape and genetics.

Understanding the Anatomy of a Dachshund’s Spine

Dachshunds have a long, narrow, and curved spine that puts them at a higher risk for IVDD. The spine is composed of 33 vertebrae, each separated by a disc that acts as a shock absorber. The discs consist of an outer ring of fibrous tissue called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus. The discs are responsible for supporting the spine’s flexibility and mobility. However, when the discs degenerate or herniate, they can compress the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain and neurological symptoms.
