Discovering the Shiloh Shepherd: A Regal and Resilient Breed

Introduction: The Shiloh Shepherd Breed

The Shiloh Shepherd is a relatively new breed that is gaining popularity among dog enthusiasts. This breed is known for its regal appearance and loyal, protective nature. Shiloh Shepherds are larger than the average German Shepherd and have a distinctive, plush coat that comes in a range of colors.

If you are considering getting a Shiloh Shepherd, it is important to understand the breed’s history, characteristics, training and temperament, health concerns, and how to find a reputable breeder. In this article, we will explore all of these topics and more to help you decide if a Shiloh Shepherd is the right dog for you.

Origins and History of the Shiloh Shepherd

The Shiloh Shepherd was developed in the United States in the 1970s by a woman named Tina Barber. Barber wanted to create a larger, more robust version of the German Shepherd that would be better suited to working and family life. To achieve this, she crossed German Shepherds with Alaskan Malamutes and other breeds, including the Great Pyrenees and the Akita.

The resulting dogs were larger and more laid-back than German Shepherds, with a distinctive, plush coat. Barber named the breed after the Shiloh Shepherd Kennels, which she founded to promote and develop the breed. Today, Shiloh Shepherds are recognized by several breed organizations, including the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry and the Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club of America.
