Elephants: The Largest Land Animal Head
Elephants are known for their impressive size, and their heads are no exception. In fact, the elephant has the largest head of any land animal. Their massive skulls can weigh up to 600 pounds, and are supported by a long, muscular neck. Elephants use their heads to forage for food, dig for water, and communicate with other elephants through head gestures and vocalizations. Their large ears and trunk also play important roles in their daily activities.
Rhinoceroses: A Heavy Head on a Powerful Body
Rhinoceroses are another animal with a large head, which they use to support their hefty bodies. Rhinoceros skulls can weigh up to 500 pounds, and are characterized by a prominent horn on the nose. These horns are actually made of compacted keratin, the same material that makes up human hair and nails. Rhinoceroses use their heavy heads to dig for food, defend their territory, and charge at potential predators. Despite their formidable appearance, rhinoceroses are actually herbivores and feed mostly on grasses and leaves.
