African elephants: Habitat and distribution
African elephants are found in 37 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. They are divided into two distinct species: the savanna elephant and the forest elephant. Savanna elephants are found in open grasslands, woodlands, and savannas, while forest elephants live in dense rainforests. African elephants can adapt to a wide range of habitats, from arid deserts to wetlands, but they are most commonly found in areas with abundant water sources.
Savanna elephants are the most widespread of the two species, with the largest populations found in Tanzania, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Forest elephants, on the other hand, are found in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, with the largest populations located in Gabon and Congo. Unfortunately, both species are facing significant threats due to deforestation, poaching, and human encroachment on their habitats.
