Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer: Dog Breed Information

The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is a relatively young dog breed that goes back to the German Wirehaired Pointer, Weimaraner, and Bohemian Rauhbart. The versatile Slovakian Pointer should always be used for hunting. As a pure family companion dog, the all-rounder is completely under-challenged.

Origin and history

The  Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is a relatively young breed of dog whose standard was only established in the 1980s. The breeders took the success story of the German Wirehaired Pointer as an example. By crossing with the Bohemian Rauhbart and the Weimaraner, they wanted to create a versatile and hardy hunting dog, suitable for post-shot work in the field, in the water, and the woods.

Appearance

The Slovak Rauhbart is a large, medium-built hunting dog with a rough, wiry coat. Its skull is rectangular. The eyes are almond-shaped and amber in color. The color of the eyes is still blue in puppies and young dogs. The ears of the Slovak Roughbeard are rounded and hanging. Its tail is set high and hangs low when at rest. For hunting use, the rod is docked halfway.

The coat of the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is about 4 cm long, rough, straight, and close-lying. A fluffy undercoat develops in winter and usually falls out entirely in summer. On the underside of the snout, the hair is slightly longer, forming the characteristic beard. The pronounced eyebrows give the rough beard a bold, serious expression. The coat color is a shaded fawn (grey) with or without white markings.

Nature

The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is a versatile hunting dog. It is suitable for all work after the shot, searching for injured game and retrieving – whether in the field, in the forest, or the water. The breed standard describes his nature as obedient and easy to train. It learns quickly but needs clear guidance and consistent, sensitive training. It bonds very closely to its caregiver and requires close family connections.

The robust Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer dog is a working dog and requires a suitable hunting task. It loves being outdoors – no matter what the weather. As a pure apartment dog or family companion dog, the rough beard would be underutilized and would quickly wither away. Therefore, it also belongs in the hands of a hunter. With a corresponding workload, the easy-care rough beard is also a pleasant, calm, and friendly family dog.
