Dog Has Diarrhea: What to Feed?

If your dog suffers from acute diarrhea, this is usually an unmistakable sign that your four-legged friend has indigestion. Wrong nutrition or spoiled food can quickly lead to diarrhea. You can usually treat these harmless causes yourself with home remedies and a light diet.

The situation is different, however, when the increased and uncontrolled bowel movements turn into chronic diarrhea. And you notice other symptoms over a longer period. Then a serious illness cannot be ruled out and must be clarified by a veterinarian.

For example, infection by parasites, bacteria, or viruses can be behind it. Or there is a hereditary change in the gastrointestinal tract that needs to be treated by a veterinarian.

Carry out the initial treatment yourself with home remedies

Before you can say for sure that an expensive vet visit is necessary, you should give your dog an initial treatment for the first two days.

Maybe it’s just a change in diet or even a food intolerance? Then a diet is usually sufficient for your dog to recover.

What to feed when you have diarrhea?

Give your pet plenty of water for the first 24 to 48 hours and avoid solid food. After all, the loss of fluid from diarrhea must be compensated for before you can give your dog the first bland diet.

Boiled rice, chicken, and cottage cheese are well tolerated, although you must thoroughly remove all bones. In the case of a mild illness, an improvement should already be noticeable after one day. If this is not the case, diarrhea could indicate a more serious illness.

Carrot soup is very easy to cook. To do this, boil a kilo of carrots for an hour and a half. The long cooking time creates a so-called oligosaccharide that protects the intestinal wall.

Dried blueberries help against mild diarrhea.

Keep an eye on the nutrient balance

Your dog can also suffer from mineral and nutrient deficiencies due to the loss of fluids and food that is not eaten.

As a preventive measure, you can administer a mixture of the following ingredients:

  • 1 liter of water, boiled
  • a teaspoon of salt
  • half a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 4 teaspoons of honey
  • 400 ml apple juice

This is very good for your dog’s stomach and will further speed up the recovery process.

Drugs that alleviate suffering

Charcoal tablets, which we all probably took during our childhood, are suitable as simple medicine. The dosage depends on body weight and size. But not all dogs accept this home remedy and you often have to force it on dogs.

It is best to only administer medications that have been prescribed by your veterinarian so that other side effects can be ruled out.

You should not experiment with drugs such as Canicur, Enteroferment, or even Perenterol or Wobenzym for humans without researching the cause.

To prevent diarrhea, you can mix non-soaked psyllium husks with the feed. They contain vegetable fibers that bind a lot of water in the intestine.

At least now the vet has to go

If diet and hydration with plenty of drinking water do not help, you must immediately consult a veterinarian. Preferably before your dog’s condition deteriorates further.

Because frequent diarrhea in dogs or even a bloody stool is no small thing you can treat yourself with home remedies. If there is fever or vomiting, you should have the cause of the disease diagnosed by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Otherwise, you endanger the life and health of your beloved four-legged friend.

Frequently Asked Question

What stops the dog from diarrhea?

An unpeeled, grated apple can be given for diarrhea. Because the apple peel contains pectin, a substance that binds water and helps to strengthen stool consistency and alleviate diarrhea.

Are bananas good for dog diarrhea?

If your four-legged friend suffers from diarrhea, you can offer him a banana to relieve diarrhea. Bananas contain a lot of pectins. These are dietary fibers that have a water-binding and constipating effect on the body. This in turn ensures that diarrhea subsides more quickly.

Why no rice in dogs with diarrhea?

In theory, a dog could even eat rice every day. If a bland diet has been prescribed for a dog, rice is even ideal. Rice should not be consumed in large quantities by a dog if it has diarrhea. Rice is dehydrating.

Which vegetables for dog diarrhea?

There are also boiled and pureed vegetables (pumpkin, carrots, potatoes). Grated apples can also help. The pectin it contains binds water and thereby strengthens the stool. Do not season the bland food and let it cool down completely before you feed it.

Which fruit for dog dia, then?

apples and pears

Pectin is a dietary fiber that cannot be digested in the dog’s stomach. It contributes to a healthy intestinal flora and promotes digestion. In addition, it has a water-binding effect, which makes apples suitable as a home remedy for dogs suffering from diarrhea.

Why is cottage cheese good for dogs?

Because grainy cream cheese is an excellent source of protein for dogs in addition to eggs. With a high protein content, cottage cheese is relatively low in fat and therefore also well suited as a light food. It is a sensible alternative to milk because the milk it contains is already fermented. That makes them easier to tolerate.

Is egg good for the dog?

If the egg is fresh, you can also feed the nutrient-rich egg yolk raw. Boiled eggs, on the other hand, are healthy for your four-legged friend because the harmful substances are broken down when heated. A good source of minerals is the shells of eggs.

Can I give my dog boiled potatoes?

Boiled potatoes are harmless and even very healthy for your furry friend. Raw potatoes, on the other hand, must not be fed. The green parts of tomatoes and Co. contain a lot of solanine and are therefore particularly harmful.
