Buy axolotls from the pet store
A year or two ago you could buy axolotls in most pet stores. However, since the staff at the pet store weren’t particularly knowledgeable about handling axolotls, buyers didn’t get much of their animals, if they even made it home…
There were many reasons why the animals were not particularly healthy. The most common reason was simply the temperature, the aquariums were not cooled and far exceeded the maximum permanent temperature of 18 degrees. Furthermore, the water was loaded with fertilizer so that the plants in the exhibition aquariums looked nice and green and appealing to visitors.
Choosing the right substrate instead of gravel or sand, and giving the right amount of food, almost no pet store has gotten it right.
So should I buy water dragons at the pet store?
If you find cross-toothed newts at a pet store, be sure to make sure the staff is competent. Ask them how warm the water should be, what substrate you should use, how often axolotls should be fed, how big and old they get, etc. If the answers match those on the Axolotl Aquarium and Axolotl Feeding pages, that’s good half the battle.
Next, look at the aquarium. Is the right substrate in the aquarium and what is the water temperature?
Then you take a close look at the axolotl. Do they look swollen, are the gills nicely pronounced, and do they show any other abnormalities?

Buy axolotls from breeders
However, if you want to be on the safe side, you should approach an axolotl breeder. There is rarely a breeder in your area, but the waiting time for an animal to be shipped or the long way to pick it up is usually worth it. Rarely do breeders make mistakes when keeping axolotls. But above all, they regularly test their animals for diseases and fungi. That’s how you don’t drag death into the aquarium.
