How Many Treats Per Day for a Puppy

Anyone who gets a dog for the first time is of course making a momentous decision because they assume a lot of responsibility for their four-legged companion. Therefore, it goes without saying that prospective dog owners find out in advance what they need to look out for when dealing with their dogs.

That is why we would like to bring you closer to a particularly important topic in this article, namely the correct feeding of the puppy.

How often should a puppy be fed?

For an adult dog, dividing the food into two or three meals is sufficient. But with a puppy, it’s important that the food is divided into more, ideally four to five, meals. For example, the vet Dr. Hölter argued that the switch to three meals a day should only be made at the age of six months. After another six months, another adjustment can be made to introduce the final feeding intervals. Depending on the size of the dog, dog owners can give their four-legged friend one to three meals a day.

Proper nutrition of the puppy

Since the topic of feeding a puppy is very controversial and has not yet been adequately answered by our other articles on the subject of food, the right food should also be discussed in this article. Especially with puppies, it is important that the food can be easily digested. However, this is not necessarily the case with feed types containing grain. That is why it is advisable to use grain-free puppy food, especially for puppies.

Not only the easy digestibility speaks for this, but also the high tolerability. With food without grain, it can be almost guaranteed that the dog will not get any food-related problems such as diarrhea. Especially when it is a puppy, it is very difficult for the owner to determine whether it is just an intolerance to the food or a serious illness in the dog.

So the feed can be changed

If you are currently using different food and want to switch to grain-free food, then there are a few important points to consider. Because a change from one day to the next can put a considerable strain on the dog’s digestion. So it is much better if you only mix in about a quarter of the new feed on the first day. After two more days, you can increase this proportion to half. In the following days, you can make a continuous increase until you have completely changed the feed.
