Buying a Sphynx Cat: You Have to Pay Attention to This

The hairless Sphynx is becoming increasingly popular despite its strange appearance. However, if you want to buy a Sphynx cat, you have to be prepared for the special needs of this cat.

The Sphynx cat is alien-looking but has a friendly, affectionate disposition. Since it lacks fur, it is very sensitive. Keeping the Sphynx cat, therefore, entails special requirements. If you want to buy a Sphynx cat, you have to take various factors into account.

Indoor Cat Only: Special Needs of the Sphynx

Without fur, the Sphynx cat freezes easily. If you’re buying a Sphynx cat, you need to be aware that this animal’s temperature sensitivity makes it unsuitable as a permanent outdoor cat. Even if the Sphynx cat sunbathes outside on the terrace or balcony in summer, there is a risk of sunburn, especially in light-skinned cats. If in doubt, however, you can protect them with cat-friendly sunscreen without fragrances and dyes.

The Sphynx cat loses more body heat than its furry counterparts. Some “naked cats” have a fine down on their skin, so they are not completely hairless, but they are more sensitive to cold and draughts. If you want to feed your Sphynx cats properly, you have to be prepared for the fact that they require larger amounts of food than a cat with fur due to their faster energy balance. Despite their special needs, the Sphynx should not be more susceptible to illness than normal cats.

Since the sebum produced by the skin cannot be absorbed through the fur, Sphynx cats will need to be bathed occasionally or wiped with a damp, soft cloth and the eyes and ears should be carefully cleaned, preferably by the vet. However, do not overdo it with skincare, and if in doubt, always ask your veterinarian for advice.

Buying a Sphynx cat: Problems of Breeding

Sphynx cats that lack whiskers are considered torture breeds. The breeding of these cats is prohibited under Article the Animal Welfare Act. However, Sphynx cats with whiskers are allowed and can be legally purchased.

However, be careful here – if you want to buy a Sphynx cat, it is best to do extensive research beforehand to be able to identify a good breeder. Don’t make any “pity purchases” and don’t fall for dubious offers from the internet or daily newspapers.

You can get a young Sphynx cat for 600 euros. You should refrain from cheaper “dumping” offers out of consideration for the welfare of the animals.
