Shortly before the end of the 19th century, out of necessity, lace makers from England moved to Normandy and brought their miniature bulldogs with them. While the breed was dying on the island, the French branch of the family flourished and had many enthusiasts in the Paris area.

There they were crossed with terriers and grips and created a small Molosser type that clearly set itself apart from the bulldog in terms of temperament and appearance. However, it was a long way to official recognition, because the breeding of the bat-eared, stocky dogs with a protruding lower jaw was in the hands of the simple people of Paris: craftsmen, street vendors, and prostitutes.
