What Do I Have to Consider When Buying a Chihuahua?

Of course, you want to buy a Chihuahua that is healthy, has a stable temperament, and conforms to the breed standard. All this is given by a club breeder who was able to gather his knowledge on training courses and under the guidance of a breed warden. He is also subject to the breeding regulations of his club and must adhere to its rules and minimum requirements.

Buy the Chihuahua puppy only from a reputable breeder who attaches great importance to health and who presents his breeding animals at a ZTP and can present certificates.

Regardless of whether you choose a hobby breeder or a club breeder: Always visit his kennel yourself and get your own impression on site.

Do not buy the Chihuahua if:

  • The breeder is abroad and wants to have the Chihuahua delivered.
  • Information from the ad does not match the local conditions (more puppies, different colors, different sex, different contact person, etc.)
  • The seller asks for a deposit or even full price without you ever seeing the Chihuahua.
  • In the kennel, there are very many dogs of different breeds.
  • The puppy is tricked into you.
  • The purchase price is too good to be true.
  • The puppy is offered out of a trunk.
  • The mother dog is not present.
  • You are offered to bring the puppy.

Always assess the Chihuahua’s health before you buy it. Does he seem lively and curious, or is he listless and listless? Does he have a bloated stomach (beware of worms)? Is his coat shiny and healthy, his eyes clear, his anus region clean? Dirty or neglected-looking puppies do not come from good breeders.

Behavior towards the breeder is also important. Dogs should not be fearful or aggressive towards their caregiver. But friendly, cheerful, and open-minded.
