Industrially produced food was specially produced for four-legged friends and can therefore be fed without any problems. However, there are sensitive or allergic dogs that do not tolerate every feed. You may have to try a little here or you may consider BARF. BARF is the raw feeding of meat, bones, fruit, and vegetables as well as other natural ingredients.
But beware: Just because food is healthy and easily digestible for humans does not necessarily apply to the Chihuahua.
Here is a list of some foods that shouldn’t end up in your Chihuahua’s bowl:
- sweets of any kind
- sugar and sweeteners
- Chocolate, pralines, and co. (the higher the cocoa content, the more toxic the chocolate is)
- onions
- chilies
- Raw peppers
- garlic
- bitter almonds
- some types of nuts (e.g. macadamia, walnuts)
- spicy and heavily seasoned foods
- table scraps
- coffee
- mushrooms
- alcohol
- raw cabbage varieties
- raw potatoes
- citrus fruits (may cause diarrhea)
- unripe fruits and vegetables
- grapes / raisins
- raw legumes (e.g. chickpeas, beans, or lentils)
- raw tomatoes
- persimmon (also known as persimmon or sharon fruit)
- fruit pits and fruit stones
- avocado
- aubergine
- rhubarb
- raw pork (rarely contains a dangerous and deadly dog virus)
- milk/cream/butter (have a laxative effect)
Warning: the list is by no means complete.
If you don’t want to put the menus together yourself, you can now use ready-mixed BARF menus, which you can easily order online or buy in pet shops or BARF shops.
