The origin of the Anatolian shepherd dogs probably goes back to the large hunting dogs of Mesopotamia. A first description under the name “Schwarzkopf” can be found in a book about a journey through Turkey from the year 1592. Over the centuries, the breed developed and perfectly adapted to the weather and living conditions of the shepherds. In hot, dry summers and in extremely cold winters, this dog guards herds and also covers large distances with its owners. In their homeland, the dogs still live mainly outdoors.

General Appearance

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is of powerful physique and powerful build. The herding dog has a broad and powerful head and a dense, double coat. Despite its size and strength, this dog appears agile and can move at great speed. The coat can be short or half-long and is allowed in all color variations.

Behavior and temperament

It seems as if this dog is aware of its intimidating effect and therefore does not feel the need to act aggressively. In fact, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are considered to be extremely peaceful and calm – provided they are not challenged, because then they know how to defend themselves. They are affectionate and loyal to their owners, the adult animals are usually very suspicious of strangers.

Need for employment and physical activity

Anatolian shepherd dogs are designed by their nature and their physique to keep moving for hours in any weather. If you want to get such a dog, you need either the condition of a marathon runner or a herd of sheep or cattle that you leave to the dog to watch over.

Upbringing

These dogs are used to being independent and having to develop their own initiative, which can also degenerate into dominance. It is therefore very important that the owner claims and quickly consolidates his position as the “lead animal” from the start. Many representatives of this breed also show problems when dealing with other dogs, because their instinct is designed to protect their own herd from strange dogs. Therefore, special attention must be paid to the socialization of the dog. However, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is not a submissive dog and will always put its owner to the test. This breed is not suitable for beginners.

Maintenance

The dog’s coat should be brushed regularly, especially in times of change of coat, the dog needs support.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is one of the toughest breeds. Nevertheless, there are isolated cases of HD.
