Find out everything about the behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, training, and care of the Barbet dog breed in the profile. Also known as the French Water Dog, the Barbet is one of the rarest dogs in the world. There are only around 500 of them worldwide.

The Barbet is one of the oldest water dogs recorded in Europe. Its origin in Europe goes back to the 14th century when it was actually still called “water dog”. Only in the 16th century was he also officially called “Barbet”. It is also considered the predecessor of the poodle and is said to have been sighted as such in a similar form in the sixth century. The dog was originally used for hunting waterfowl, and the barbet can still sometimes be found in this function today.

General Appearance

The Barbet is characterized above all by its special fur. It consists of long hair that feels like a ball of yarn and is frizzy. In addition, the fur is not only waterproof but also the ideal heat protection. In addition to black, the barbet is also available in chestnut brown, white, sand, gray, or fawn. Not only the hair but also the tail of the barbet is quite thick. Tail carried high except when the dog is moving quickly. A small hook can be seen at the top. The barbet’s neck is short but very strong, and the ears are set low. In addition, the head contains hair that reaches the bridge of the nose. The long and very thick beard of the animal is also indispensable.

Behavior and temperament

As a classic water dog, the Barbet is very water-loving. Even when the water temperatures are very low, this does not deter the barbet. He is generally a very even-tempered, gentle dog that is particularly attached to his owner and is considered a real family dog. The water dog feels particularly comfortable in the company of people, under these conditions it is also easy to educate.

Need for employment and physical activity

The barbet was/is used for retrieving waterfowl and is therefore very specialized in scents. This is why scent games, nose, and retrieval work are best suited for occupation, but the otherwise well-balanced dog also needs exercise because it is very active. The Barbet is not an apartment dog, but he likes to be around people and therefore takes a little more time than many other dogs.

Upbringing

The Barbet is easy to train, very willing to learn, and intelligent. However, a lot of time has to be invested in upbringing and the element of water should play an important role. Integration in a family makes it easier to raise the barbet, where it feels very comfortable and gains more self-confidence. However, the owner should not be too strict with the barbet, because although it is very lively, it is also sensitive.

Maintenance

The Barbet has a very woolly coat that is also curly and can easily become matted. Therefore, daily, complex care is very important here. The dog should be regularly brushed and groomed.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

As a working breed, the French Water Dog is very healthy and hardy.
