Thanks to its short, flat nose, the bulldog was able to breathe while holding on to the bull's snout. It took him stamina to hold on to the bull for a long time, no matter how hard he tried to shake him off.
#12 The Bulldog’s high sensitivity to pain was developed to enable them to outdo themselves in this barbaric sport.
Even the creases on his head have a purpose: they were to keep the bull's blood out of his eyes once the dog had bitten the bull, so the bulldog wouldn't be "blinded" by the blood.
