#1 The ancestors of the Beauceron were specialized in transhumance in the French lowlands and shaped the European breed of short-haired herding dogs early on.

The Beauceron breed was formed in the 19th century, and the first official breed standard was created in 1889. It owes its name to the so-called Beauce, a sparsely populated area between Chartres and Orléans, which offered good conditions for pastoralism and is considered the origin of the Beauceron. At that time, however, the names Chien de Beauce (French, dt. "Dog from Beauce"), Beauceron, and also Bas-Rouge (French, dt. "Redstocking" because of its reddish fur covered legs) were common, to this day it has Designation Beauceron most enforced. He was a valued companion of French shepherds because of her ability to both effectively lead the flock of sheep and scare off predators and cattle rustlers with threats.

#2 Even today, the Beauceron enjoys great popularity throughout Europe, but especially in its home country of France: around 3,000 to 3,500 puppies are born there every year.

While it used to be common practice to crop the Beauceron's ears and sometimes its tail, at least tail docking is listed as a serious fault in the FCI breed standard. Thanks to stricter animal protection laws in many parts of Europe, more and more animals have their natural floppy ears, but occasionally they can still be seen with cropped ears.

#3 Thanks to its original activity as a herding dog, the Beauceron is a people-friendly, cooperative, but also self-confident dog.

Accustomed to making decisions alone and working independently, his independence can easily be misinterpreted as stubbornness. In fact, however, he is a very empathetic and sensitive animal that does not tolerate harsh handling well. He has a high stimulus threshold and temperament is fearless and obedient. Due to its strong stature and excellent constitution, the Beauceron needs a lot of exercises and a fit master to really be able to work out. Because he is not only a muscle man but also a really smart guy, the Beauceron is well suited for many dog sports and learns new tricks quickly and happily. Because of his size, however, you have to be careful not to overload his joints, especially in sports such as agility.
