Scotties are a type of terrier, meaning they were bred to dig. The name terrier comes from land (meaning earth) because they “go to the ground”. Strong-willed and ferocious, the dogs were used to remove vermin from buildings and drive badgers out of their homes. When faced with something as ferocious as a badger (in its native turf, no less), the dogs had to be tough and ruthlessly brave. At one point, one author seriously speculated that Scotties might have descended from bears and not dogs.

Although they have a background in extermination, the little dogs have also enjoyed the finer things in life. King James VI of Scotland was a big fan of the Scottish terrier in the 17th century and helped popularize them in Europe. He even sent six Scotties to France as gifts. Queen Victoria was also a fan of the breed and kept a few in her sprawling kennel. Her favorite was a Scottie named Laddie.
