All dogs carry the Demodex mite. The mother passes this mite on to the puppies in the first days of their lives. The mite can also be passed on to humans, or other dogs - only the mother can "pass" this mite on to her puppies.

Demodex mites live in the follicles of the hair and are not usually a problem. However, if your Bulldog has a weakened or compromised immune system, he can get canine demodicosis. Canine demodicosis can be localized or generalized.

The localized form causes red, scaly patches of skin on the head and forelegs. It is considered a puppy disease and often it heals on its own. You should still take your dog to the vet, as the clinical picture can also develop into a generalized form of canine demodicosis. (Enlarged lymph nodes are often a sign.)

Generalized canine demodicosis affects the entire body and affects older puppies and young adult dogs. Skin spots, bald patches, and skin infections appear all over the body. Dogs that develop localized or generalized demodicosis should not be used for breeding as this disease is genetic.

Hip dysplasia is an inherited disorder in which the femur is not securely attached to the hip joint. Most bulldogs appear to develop hip dysplasia based on their X-rays as they have inherently weak hip joints, however it is uncommon for them to develop the attendant problems of lameness unless they become overweight or during their rapid growth period too much be moved.

If your Bulldog is diagnosed with hip dysplasia, get a second opinion and research other treatment options, such as supplements, before agreeing to surgery.
