ព័ត៌មាន និងលក្ខណៈពូជ Basset Hound

The sad look, the short legs, and the huge floppy ears give the Basset Hound a high recognition value. In the profile, you get information about the origin, the character, and the attitude of the British dog breed.

ប្រវត្តិសាស្រ្តនៃ Basset Hound

The origins of the Basset Hound lie in the Middle Ages in France, where monks bred hunting dogs. The Basset d’Artois and Basset Artésien Normand breeds, which have already died out, are considered to be the direct ancestors of the breed. The first specimens did not reach the British Isles until the middle of the 19th century. To improve the dogs’ sense of smell, the English crossed into Bloodhounds. There he quickly developed into a popular bloodhound for hunting rabbits in packs. In 1880 the British Kennel Club recognized the Basset Hound as a breed.

Outside of Europe, the breed spread mainly in the USA. There he was meanwhile bred as a pure fashion dog with exaggeratedly long ears and loose skin. In the 1970s, to their chagrin, dogs reached the peak of their popularity. Today, breeders are paying more attention to dog-friendly and healthy Basset breeds. The FCI counts the Basset Hound in Group 6 “Scent hounds, scent hounds and related breeds” in Section 1.3 “Small scent hounds”.

The Basset Hound is a good-natured, lovable, and at times stubborn dog. He is extremely intelligent and quickly knows how to get his way. Despite this, the laid-back dogs are never aggressive or hostile. Bred as pack dogs, Bassets are very social animals and are always friendly to strange dogs. Their threshold is extremely high and they get along well with children. Despite his sad look, the basset hound is a really happy nature and is very playful.

The Appearance of the Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a strong, short-legged dog with noticeably large ears. The forelegs are muscular. The skin tends to wrinkle slightly on some parts of the body, such as the cheeks and forehead. The dark eyes are diamond-shaped and show a calm and serious expression. The so-called ectropion is widespread in the breed. This is a disease in which the lower eyelid droops so much that the red inside is visible. The large floppy ears reach in length slightly past the tip of the muzzle. The fur on the ears is supple with a velvety texture. The rest of the fur is smooth and dense. The dogs are mainly bred in the colors black-white-brown and lemon-white. However, all other hound colors are possible.

Since the Basset Hound was originally used for independent hunting, it is still independent today. He, therefore, needs a particularly consistent and understanding education. A positive bond with his human is important to the dog, although he would never submit. You will achieve the fastest success with stubborn dogs if you convince them with treats and praise. It is also expedient to playfully teach the little dog new commands and challenge its intelligence. In particular, you should get the strong hunting instinct under control early on with a pure companion dog.

Activities with the Basset Hound

Despite their sluggish appearance and short legs, the Basset Hound is not to be underestimated. Even if he is not particularly fast, he is very persistent. It can follow small games over long distances and thanks to its good sense of smell it does not lose track. Even as a pure family dog, the Basset, therefore, needs a busy occupation and a lot of exercise. Long, leisurely walks with lots of sniffing breaks are his great passion. Physically, he is not well suited to dog sports. Intelligence games and nose work at home give the clever dog great pleasure.

With its short, smooth coat, the Basset Hound is a rather low-maintenance dog. Grooming is done quickly with sporadic brushing. Unfortunately, due to overbreeding, some representatives of the breed are very susceptible to various diseases. Eye problems and ear infections are not uncommon. For this reason, it is important to regularly check and gently clean both parts of the body. In addition, the short-legged dog tends to quickly become fat. So make sure you eat a balanced diet with high-quality dog food.

Is the Basset Hound Right for Me?

The Basset Hound is a headstrong dog that enjoys challenging its owners to mental battles. This quality coupled with his strong hunting instinct makes him an advanced dog. You should not only respect the Basset Hound’s own will but rather value it. When buying a puppy, it is important to go to a reputable breeder who pays attention to the well-being of their animals. It is best if he is affiliated with the “Basset Hound Club of Germany” or the “Basset Hound Friends of Germany”. There are not many breeders in Germany, which is why around 100 Basset puppies are born each year.
