The origins of the Basset Hound lie in the Middle Ages in France, where monks bred hunting dogs. The Basset d’Artois and Basset Artésien Normand breeds, which have already died out, are considered to be the direct ancestors of the breed. The first specimens did not reach the British Isles until the middle of the 19th century. To improve the dogs’ sense of smell, the English crossed into Bloodhounds. There he quickly developed into a popular bloodhound for hunting rabbits in packs. In 1880 the British Kennel Club recognized the Basset Hound as a breed.
Outside of Europe, the breed spread mainly in the USA. There he was meanwhile bred as a pure fashion dog with exaggeratedly long ears and loose skin. In the 1970s, to their chagrin, dogs reached the peak of their popularity. Today, breeders are paying more attention to dog-friendly and healthy Basset breeds. The FCI counts the Basset Hound in Group 6 “Scent hounds, scent hounds and related breeds” in Section 1.3 “Small scent hounds”.

The fur on the ears is supple with a velvety texture. The rest of the fur is smooth and dense. The dogs are mainly bred in the colors black-white-brown and lemon-white. However, all other hound colors are possible.

It can follow small games over long distances and thanks to its good sense of smell it does not lose track. Even as a pure family dog, the Basset, therefore, needs a busy occupation and a lot of exercise. Long, leisurely walks with lots of sniffing breaks are his great passion. Physically, he is not well suited to dog sports. Intelligence games and nose work at home give the clever dog great pleasure.

There are not many breeders in Germany, which is why around 100 Basset puppies are born each year.
