These ponies have been in the islands for over 4,000 years and were used for pulling carts and working in the fields. Today, they are used as riding ponies and are popular with children. The Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society was established in 1890 to preserve the breed and promote its welfare. The Shetland pony is one of the smallest breeds in the world, standing at only 28-42 inches tall.
