MDR1 defect
Many Collies suffer from the so-called MDR1 defect. This is an inherited sensitivity to drugs or certain active substances that can lead to movement disorders and even death. Since this genetic defect is widespread among Collies, a genetic test should be carried out in order to be certain and not to use appropriate medication.
Dermatomyozit
Dermatomyositis is a skin and muscle disease, also genetic, that occurs exclusively in young dogs and is characterized by redness, pustules, hair loss, and crusts on the muzzle and/or limbs and tail. Muscle wasting and weakness occur in the late stages.
Collie Eye Anomaliyasi (CEA)
It is a genetic eye disease that can lead to impaired vision and even blindness.

A well-bred collie puppy is usually not available for less than 1000 euros. Since some breed-typical diseases are common in Collies, reputable breeding is of central importance. Make sure that the breeder you choose is a member of a VDH association.

Collies can also be suitable for beginners in dog ownership. They are very willing and able to learn, have little hunting instinct, and do not tend to be stubborn or idiosyncratic. Of course, training a Collie is not a surefire success either. Before you buy a dog, you should find out a lot about the breed and its characteristics and needs.
