Introduction: What is a Pika?
Pikas are small, herbivorous mammals belonging to the family Ochotonidae. They are also known as conies, rock rabbits, or whistling hares due to their appearance and vocalizations. Pikas are found in the mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. They are known for their adorable looks and their importance in alpine ecosystems.
Taxonomy and Distribution of Pikas
Pikas are classified into two genera: Ochotona and Conothoa. There are about 30 different species of pikas, and they are found in alpine and subalpine habitats of the Northern Hemisphere. Pikas are found in the mountains of Europe, Asia, and North America. They are commonly found in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada in North America. They are also found in the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Ural Mountains. Pikas prefer high altitude environments with rocky terrain and vegetation cover. They are able to survive in harsh environments with extreme temperature fluctuations and limited food resources.
