Originally, the term Great Dane was used to describe large and powerful dogs in general, regardless of their breed. Over time, fixed names for the different types of dogs emerged from this collective term. In 1878, a committee of judges and breeders in Berlin combined several of these species under the collective term Great Dane and laid the basis for the breed characteristics and breeding regulations of the Great Dane for the first time. The first mandatory standards were established in 1880. The genetic origin of the Great Dane lies in the Bullenbeisser dogs as well as in the hatzrüden and Saupackers used as hunting dogs, which showed both characteristics of the sighthound and the English mastiff.
