#13 First known under the breed name “Yarmouth Toller” or “Little River Duck Dog”, numerous dogs fell victim to a distemper epidemic at the beginning of the 20th century, so that the new breed almost became extinct again.
It is thanks to dog lover Colonel Coldwell that this interesting breed has been revived. Between 1920 and 1950 he searched for remaining specimens and used them to set up his own breed so that in 1945 the first 15 specimens were finally registered with the Canadian Kennel Club under the new name Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
#14 The little retriever only made the leap across the Atlantic to Europe in 1980, and he found many enthusiastic followers, especially in the Scandinavian countries.
Tollers have also been bred on a small scale in Germany since 1996.
#15 Are Tollers hard to train?
Tollers are smart and easy to train, but they are independent and like to do things their own way. They have an attractive red coat that's easy to care for and are excellent watchdogs.
