#16 On average, the Bichon Frise lives to be around 12 to 13 years old and has a relatively robust constitution.
The oldest Bichon Frisé ever documented is said to have reached the age of 21. Like many other small dog breeds, patellar luxations can occur, and cataracts, diabetes, liver shunts, and heart problems are also common in this breed. If ear care is neglected, there may be a tendency for ear infections due to lop ears, but this is easily avoided. Unfortunately, however, excessive fur is a major problem with the Bichon Frisé. In addition to allergic skin reactions to ticks, fleas, pollen, house dust, etc., it can happen that dogs get too hot under all their fur, especially in summer. Then they start biting their paws and skin, which can lead to wounds and later scarring.
#17 Bichon Frisés used to be found in European aristocratic houses because of their friendly nature and their attractive appearance.
Especially in Italy, Spain, and France, the fluffy white balls were widespread as lap warmers for the mansions. With the French Revolution, however, this existence came to an end. After many nobles were arrested, beheaded, or expelled, stray lap dogs could suddenly be found in the streets. Street performers and walking acrobats cared for many animals because the clever dogs could easily remember tricks and new tricks. This is how many Bichon Frise found a new "career" in the circus!
Even if the Bichon Frise does not need a lot of exercises to be happy, they can still keep up with their two-legged friends on longer walks.
