Raising a Cat: Preventing Jealousy

Anyone who wants to train their cat faces a major challenge, especially when there is jealousy between two or more animals. These tips should help you to prevent jealousy and not to endanger the harmony between your pets in the first place…

The jealousy between cats can arise both when a new cat has moved in and in well-established teams. Often the cat owner now tends to coddle and protect the source of the jealousy while attempting to train the other cat by scolding it for its jealousy behavior. Unfortunately, this does not prevent the problem but usually makes it worse.

Preventing Jealousy in Cats: Here’s What You Can Do

If you want your cats to get along well, you should make sure, especially when a second cat moves in, that your first pet does not feel neglected or even replaced. You can achieve that with small gestures. For example, always give her the food bowl and treat first. She is also greeted first.

However, if things get uncomfortable between the two of them: Distract your velvet paws. Playing helps if you want to prevent jealousy, for example, throw treats that both have to chase after – this is fun for almost all cats.

Also, be consistent in cat training to avoid jealousy. What one cat is not allowed to do, another is not allowed to do either, no exceptions. Also, do not force your loved ones to be close, for example by putting them in a basket together, because this will inevitably lead to arguments. Let them decide for themselves how quickly or how slowly they want to get used to each other!

Before There is a Crisis: Pull the Emergency Brake

If you pay attention to small signals in cat language between your pets, you will usually notice early on that a fight is about to break out between your darlings. Then there are a number of tricks you can use to prevent it. For example, if one of your cats gives you an envious look when you pet the other cat, you can work on getting it to have a more positive attitude. After each petting of one cat, dedicate yourself even more to your other cat to make her understand that it means something good when your roommate is petted: Namely, that you will come to her in a moment.

Play with the two when stress is brewing as it is distracting. Also, avoid for a while situations that you judge to be critical through experience.
