Segure Gold Dust Day Gecko, aparência colorida no pescoço

The gold dust day gecko is very often kept in terrariums because it is quite easy to keep. Its great colors and the “gold dust” in the neck area make it extremely attractive. The group of Phelsuma laticauda consists of two subspecies. On the one hand from the nominate form Phelsuma laticauda laticauda and another subspecies, Phelsuma laticauda angularis.

Characteristics and Habitat of the Gold Dust Day Gecko Phelsuma Laticauda

The distribution area of Phelsuma laticauda laticauda extends from northeast to northwest Madagascar and ends about 150 km before the city of Ambanja. Phelsuma laticauda angularis is native almost exactly from there to about 130 km south. The habitats of these two subspecies themselves are extremely complex. They can be found almost everywhere, although Phelsuma laticauda angularis is not seen as often as its relatives as a cultural follower near the houses of the inhabitants.

The nominate form Phelsuma laticauda laticauda reaches a total length of up to approximately 140 mm. Phelsuma laticauda angularis, on the other hand, is slightly smaller at 120 mm. In terms of color, however, both subspecies are similar. The points on the neck, which look like gold dust, also give these animals their names. Furthermore, they have a striking red mark on the back, which is different, however.

In Phelsuma laticauda laticauda, the gold dust-like points are distributed a little more over the body than in Phelsuma laticauda angularis. The basic color of both species is green. Phelsuma laticauda angularis stands out due to its magnificent emerald green. The dress of Phelsuma laticauda laticauda, on the other hand, is adorned with a slightly lighter green shade.

The Gold Dust Day Gecko in the Terrarium

Both subspecies are very easy to look after in the terrarium and are therefore often chosen as beginner animals by beginners. But not only the blaze of color, but also the lively behavior distinguishes the animals and is extremely interesting for the observer. You have to spray with water several times a day to maintain the appropriate humidity in the terrarium. Make sure that there is sufficient lighting with UV radiation and enough climbing opportunities. If possible, choose objects or plants with smooth surfaces, such as bamboo. Gold dust day geckos should always be kept in pairs. The terrarium for a pair of gold dust day geckos should not be less than 50 x 50 x 80 cm.

Like all Phelsumen, gold dust day geckos are subject to species protection law. However, with this species there is no obligation to notify the species protection authority, only an obligation to provide evidence. So make sure to ask for proof of origin of the animals when buying them and keep them in a safe place.
