Protecting Cats From Sunburn: Suitable Sunscreen

Cats also need to be protected from sunburn, especially their ears and nose are sensitive. Light fur noses and cats without fur need a lot of protection. But which sunscreen is best applied to the cat’s nose and ears?

There is also special sunscreen for cats, but certain products for humans also protect cats from sunburn. What criteria do they have to meet and what other protective measures are there?

Sunscreen for Cats: This is Important

The sun protection factor (SPF) of the sunscreen should be at least 30 for cats, and 50 or more for Sphynx cats and white fur noses. This also applies to freelancers. Because they don’t come back from their sunbaths and exploration tours to apply cream so often, a high level of protection against both UVA and UVB rays is essential.

The cream does not have to be explicitly labeled for animals but should be suitable for sensitive skin and free from fragrances and dyes. Ideally, the sunscreen is waterproof, absorbs immediately, and immediately protects against the sun, so it does not have to work first. Mineral UV filters are recommended. It’s also best to make sure the sunscreen isn’t oil-based, as such products could be toxic to your cat if it licks the cream.

Apply cream, especially to the edges of the ears and the nose, as well as the inner thighs and belly where the fur is very thin. Unpigmented areas of skin and fresh scars should also be rubbed with sunscreen. So-called naked cats need protection all over their bodies.

More Tips to Protect Against Sunburn

Between 11 am and 4 pm the sun’s rays are particularly strong and dangerous – try to keep white, red, and furless cats indoors during this time of fine weather. The walks of the velvet paws should be moved to the morning or evening hours. Enough shady spots through trees, bushes, awnings, or parasols offer additional sun protection for that outside in the garden and at the same time protect them from heatstroke or sunstroke. Indoor cats should not snooze for too long at the open window or on the balcony directly in the sun. Play tents and caves in the scratching post provide shade and are comfortable.
