Anyone who sees an adult Irish Wolfhound walking towards you may well be surprised at a shoulder height of at least 79 centimeters – but there is no need to be afraid. Because, although these dogs were already used for hunting in ancient Ireland, and later even for hunting bears in England, they have an incredibly gentle and loving nature.

And this is exactly what was described and recorded in Ireland more than a thousand years ago, for example, in the saga of Brenne Niels:

“I want to give you a male that I got from Ireland. He has huge limbs and, as a companion, he equates to a man ready for battle. Also, he has the mind of a human and will bark at your enemies, but never at your friends. He will be able to tell by the face of each person whether he is plotting something good or bad against you. And he will give his life for you.”

Gentle, demanding, and affectionate – this is how Irish Wolfhounds behave towards their people, although they are unlikely to want to leave them. Thanks to this loving nature and low irritability, they are becoming more and more popular as family dogs.

As is the case with many large dogs, a house with a garden in the countryside would be ideal, but of course, a larger apartment is also possible, provided the dogs get enough exercise and space at home.

It is only important that the dwelling is not on the fifth floor without an elevator, because the larger the dog, the more dangerous the stairs are for the joints of animals. Especially in old age, you have to carry four-legged friends with you, which becomes hard work for an Irish Wolfhound, at least 40.5 kg for females and 54.5 kg for males.

Otherwise, the dog owner should be active or at least allow their dog to exercise and educate the animal with love. Because if such a gentle Irish giant is raised and maintained competently, appropriately, and with great human love, then he will respond to this love in the form of boundless devotion and will always stand next to his man.
