The experts do not quite agree on the origin of the Podenco Canarios. Because of their unmistakable resemblance, the Podencos are thought to be closely related to the Tesem.
The Tesem is an extinct breed of dog of ancient Egyptian origin that can be found in numerous Egyptian images. The pointed ears, the curved tail, and the slender body were often made as sculptures and are strongly reminiscent of the Podenco.
Another theory is that this breed of dog originated in the Canary Islands, where they were used to hunt rabbits and hares. Even today you can find most specimens in the Canary Islands.
